The list below is in no order of importance, they are all important and need to be adhered to collaboratively with your Web Design.  Changes to the search engine rating criteria are altering rapidly, more recently with the updates Panda and Penguin.

1)      The first step is a well-built web site, professionally designed that works on modern web browsers.

2)      Provide a clear URL structure, effective internal linking (allowing search engines to crawl your site), avoid using numbers or irrelevant text (/223223).  An effective website navigation, with fast loading pages (there is some debate as to the importance of this).

3)      The most important information should be in HTML text format, ensuring this information is easily crawled and indexed from your web design

4)      Research your keywords thoroughly, this is a drawn-out process but will pay dividends if completed properly.  Understand what people are searching for, what is popular and relevant.  Do not try to exploit keywords, use them naturally and tactically throughout your web design.  Try to have your keywords near the top of the page.  Remember, some search terms will be very difficult to achieve top ten results, especially if you are competing against large established corporations.  My advice, look for different search terms.  Some useful websites to help you.

  1. Google AdWords Keyword Planner
  2. Google Analytics
  3. Word tracker

5)      Title tags need to be brief and specific (include key words), remember that this should only be about 75 characters in total.

6)      Make sure that video and images are tagged appropriately and correctly in the web design, as clever as search engines are, they cannot understand what is in a video by watching it.

7)      Link building to your web design, try quality over quantity.  One link from a high quality site will have a lot more importance attached to it then dozens of ‘spammy’ links.  An example of a high quality website is Wikipedia, due to the content and links.  Do not discard entirely(IMO) numerous self-made links, done properly from articles this will help and should not be discounted in the pursuit of high quality links only.

8)      Within your web design create relevant blogs and forum articles with quality content via Social Media outlets with links back to your web site.  Makes these links subtle and relevant, do not just add them for the sake of it as this will annoy people.

9)      Create a site map that will help search engines, then submit your XML to google.

The above is providing you some of the basics to help you with web site optimisation techniques, if you would like to discuss any of your web design requirements with a top London company please call +44 (0) 208 8948 5808, contact@netdreams.co.uk or visit our web site for further information www.netdreams.co.uk
